As a company who strives for involvement with and the betterment of the community around us, we decided it was time that Cafe Kubal joins forces with a charity. In pursuit of a charity with similar values and goals, we discovered Charity Water, a group of passionate and determined creative problem-solvers who want to make a difference. Their mission is to bring clean and safe drinking water to every person in the world, and we want to be a part of it. Water is an essential ingredient of great coffee. It is a lump of clay out of which a carefully roasted, ground, and extracted cup of coffee is molded, and makes up a large percentage of an actual cup of jo. Although coffee is the beautiful beverage that makes the world go round for many of us, even more importantly; clean water is an essential for life. Charity Water is heartily pursuing that goal.  Together, we aim to make a change for the better. In addition to the basic function of hydration, water is a catalyst of change in several other ways as well. 90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are in children under five years old. Additionally, In Africa alone, people spend 40 billion hours every year walking for water. Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, which is unprotected and likely contaminated. Margaret Catley-Carlson, Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum puts it most powerfully as she states, “Water is an astonishingly complex and subtle force in an economy. It is the single constraint on the expansion of every city, and bankers and corporate executives have cited it as the only natural limit to economic growth.”

Charity Water’s approach to seeking clean water is to travel the world to find inspiring organizations that are providing long-lasting water and sanitation services, and then fund their most successful programs. Their goal isn’t just to get water flowing, but to make sure it flows for many years. Charity Water’s mission hits home for Cafe Kubal. Their goal is clearly an important one. Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, and Tanzania are just a few of the countries that Charity Water services with whom we also source coffee from. Our business is not content with sourcing beans from countries and never looking back. We want to share a complete partnership with those countries and view their tribulations as our own. To join in Charity Water’s mission, we are very excited to be hosting the Kubal Water Ball. The goal of the event is to raise funds for Charity Water, through an evening of camaraderie, inspiring ambiance, and great food (and coffee). We hope to draw in the community with this event and better educate others and ourselves on the need for clean water and what Charity Water is doing to help that. We hope that you will join us on this journey to help bring clean water to parts of the world.
